  • Injection less : No injection is given, only anesthetic drops are put into eye prior to surgery (topical anesthesia)
  • Patch less : No patch is given post operatively so that patient can go home driving his vehicle.
  • Stitch less : No stitch is given.
  • Painless : No pain during surgery.
  • Without need for admission and after operation the patient can go home immediately.
  • Without dos & dont’s

Choose right lens at the time of cataract surgery.

At our centre live Cataract Surgery is shown to the patients relatives in the waiting hall on television monitor.

Stabilization of vision and  rehabilitation of the patient  is quick in this type of surgery so this is the preferred surgery  for cataract these days.

With latest MICS surgery ,Patient can go back driving his car or vehicle ,so this surgery is known as ”drive back” surgery. To know more about MICS click here…

3. IOL & related consumables  There are multiple IOL choices available for the surgery which are explained below. These lenses can be inserted through a small 1.8 to 2.8 mm opening

Aberration free/ Aspheric IOLS
These IOLs gives good quality of vision post operative due to the lens design, it also improves the contrast sensitivity of the patient
and good night vision. These lenses also filter the harmful UV light and blue light which are said to be harmful to the retina.

Toric IOLS
These IOLs correct the pre existing corneal astigmatism there by reducing the possibility of spectacle wear for distant vision post operatively.

Multifocal IOLs [Bifocal and Trifocal]
These IOLs provide clear vision for all distances hence almost 90% of the day-to-day activities can be performed without the need for additional glasses. Rarely the patient may experience glare during nights post operatively but usually gets adapted within a few months.

Accomodating IOLs These IOLs have flexible hinges that enables them to change focus for different distances hence providing clear distance, intermediate and near vision without glasses.

Ophthalmic Laser (NIDEK YC-1800ophthalmic YAG Laser system)

The NIDEK YC-1800 is the new disruption laser from NIDEK designed in particular for applications in posterior capsulotomy (post-cataract therapy) and iridotomy. However, the YAG laser is also used for trabeculotomy, anterior capsulotomy and for IOL polishing.

What is Phaco emulsification? (Stitch less cataract surgery)

In this surgery the cataractous lens is broken down into small pieces with the help of ultra sound  energy and sucked out. The operation is done through a < 1 mm to 2.8 mm small tunnel incision so that after operation no stitches are required because incision is self sealing. Intra ocular lens is also implanted through the same incision. The foldable lenses are used these days. These lenses get folded and are loaded in a plastic injection. The lens is then injected into the eye through the small incision made for surgery.

What is Cataract?

Opacification of normally transparent  lens of human eye is known as Cataract. The opaque lens does not allow the light rays to pass to the retina so that clear image is not formed over the retina. The patient experiences painless decrease in vision. The objects appear blurred.

CATARACT

Once the cataract develops it has to be removed and  an  artificial lens has to be put in to eye. In the past whole of the  cartaractous lens was removed surgically. The procedure was known as Intra Capsular Cataract Extraction (ICCE) and the patient was given thick glasses to wear which had  its own problems.

Then came extra capsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE) In which after giving injection around  the eye ball  about 8 to 10 mm incision was made, anterior capsule  of the lens is cut, lens nucleus  is removed, cortex is aspirated and   intraocular lens is implanted  over the posterior capsule and the incision was closed with fine  sutures. A patch was given on the operated eye.

The vision after this operation takes four to six weeks to stabilize so that rehabilitation of the patient used to takes a long time. This procedure is still widely practiced in our country.

Extra Capsular Cataract  Extraction [Old method]

Now a days phacoemulsification (stitch less cataract surgery) is the most preferred cataract surgery these days. Over the time this surgery has undergone evolution and it has revolutionized the cataract operation to the extent that no anaesthesia is required for the procedure.
