Dental implant types
Dental implants are of two types;
1. Basal or bicortical implants.
2. conventional implants.
Basal implants are dental implants that employ the very hard basal cortical portion of the jaws for implant retention. These implants are uniquely and specifically designed for the sole purpose of gaining anchorage from the basal cortical bone and have gone through several changes and modifications in the past several decades.To understand bicortical implants you can learn from simple fact that if we drill in wall and put a screw you get immediate strength to hang a photo frame. conventional dental implants[old method] on the other hand involves putting screws in soft part of jaw bone ,then waiting for six months so that the screw put is captured strongly by healing forces of body,before it can be loaded with artificial teeth for eating.This waiting period turns off the patient and is quite cumber some. Dental implant technique
During the consult and planning stage, the dental surgeon will visually examine the site in the mouth where a dental implant is being considered as well as look at dental imaging studies (X-rays, panoramic films[OPG], and/or CT scans). At this time, the quality and quantity of jawbone is assessed to determine if more bone is needed at the site. Once it has been established that a dental implant can be placed in the desired location, the patient will return for surgical procedures for the dental implant(s). During all surgical procedure appointments, the patient is usually given local anesthetic to numb the surgical area as well as any other sedatives necessary for comfort and anxiety.
There are three phases to make a implant supported tooth in old conventional dental implant technique.
- Surgical phase : Under local anaesthesia implant is placed during this period. Admission in nursing home is not required during implant placement.
- Healing phase : Titanium implant takes three to four months to get attached with surrounding bone.This is called osseo-integration phase.
- Restoration phase : A ceramic crown is made & fix it up over the implant head & now it will act like natural tooth.
