Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental treatment for removing infection from inside a tooth following dental caries. It can also protect the tooth from future infections.
It is a specific procedure for treating the dental pulp when irreversible damage has occurred. Diseased or injured teeth can be preserved by RCT to avoid extraction. Damaged & infected pulp is removed & inner area is filled with special filling materials.
what is root canal?
Underneath each tooth’s outer enamel is an area of soft tissue called the pulp, which carries the tooth’s nerves, veins, and arteries. Root canals are very small, thin passageways that branch off from the top pulp chamber through the root tip. A tooth can have up to four root canals.
Sometimes, the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected by disease or bacteria, or damaged by a traumatic injury to the tooth. An infected and untreated root canal can allow bacteria in the mouth to enter the bloodstream and cause infections in other parts of the body. In addition to staving off potentially harmful infections in other parts of your body, root canal treatment can generally save your damaged tooth.
Root canal treatment RCT procedure steps
During the root canal treatment the infected pulp is removed from the tooth and replaced with a special filling. The steps of the procedure are the following:
1.An x-ray is taken for an accurate diagnosis.
2.Local anesthesia is administered to make the treatment completely painless
3.The dentist makes a small opening on the crown to access the root canals.
4.The infected pulp is removed.
5.The dentist cleans the root canals thoroughly and enlarges them to be able to fill them properly.
6.In case the root canal treatment is carried out over multiple sessions, the dentist may place medication in the cleaned canal to kill any remaining bacteria and seals the tooth with a temporary filling.
7.During the following visit, the medication and the temporary filling is removed, and the root canal filling is placed.
8.Finally, the dentist seals the tooth with a filling or a crown, depending on the extent of the damage.
RCT PROCEDURE STEPS
The circulation stops in the devitalised tooth which – along with the lack of pulp inside the tooth – makes the tooth more fragile and prone to chipping. In some cases, the dentist will recommend a crown to be placed on the tooth to avoid further problems.
what is single sitting Root Canal treatment RCT?
Single sitting root canal treatment is the non surgical conservative treatment of endodontically involved tooth which consist of complete biomechanical preparation and obturation of the root canal in a single visit.
Initially these procedures were done in 3-4 sittings which often became tedious to the patient. But now these procedures can be completed in a single day and that too within 45- 50 minutes.

Lightcure Filling
These days filling of teeth after doing RCT is done by a special material which has a same color as the normal tooth the procedure is known as Lightcure Filling. It is done with the help of UV rays.
